Offering ONline Therapy Across MT & WA

Hi! I'm Honey. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with roots in Bozeman and Seattle.

I specialize in helping clients heal the transdiagnostic effects of trauma, which can show up in a variety of different symptoms and diagnoses other than just "PTSD."

My approach to therapy is integrative, relational, and non-pathologizing, rooted in viewing current symptoms as valiant attempts to cope and survive when the ability to integrate an emotional experience (or series of emotional experiences) is overwhelmed.

Instead of asking yourself "what's wrong with me?" I help you to become curious about how even the parts of yourself that you'd like to "fix" or the symptoms that are causing you distress now helped you in some way then.

Trauma is the experience of disempowerment and relational disconnection held in the nervous system

Getting "stuck" in survival mode...

Trauma isn't an event or a memory of the factual details of what happened to us. It is an experience that is held in the nervous system, affecting the way we relate to and experience ourselves, other people, and our life more broadly. Sometimes we live with these effects long after the traumatic events or conditions are over because the amygdala remains on high alert and the body keeps responding to unconscious trauma reminders as if still in danger. That’s not a flaw. It’s an adaption that helped you survive.

If you find yourself anxious or “on edge” for no clear reason, easily overwhelmed, or feeling numb and disconnected. These aren’t signs of something wrong with you. What we call symptoms — anxiety, dissociation, substance use problems, mood swings — are survival strategies. The brain and body learned to protect you the best way they knew how. Under conditions of threat (especially when enduring or early in life) the brain becomes wired for protection.

Long after the threat has passed, parts of us can still be stuck in “survival mode” — hypervigilant, shut down, or braced for danger. Until our body relearns to recognize safety, the most vulnerable parts of us are also likely to be disowned or forgotten because our nervous system remembers the pain they endured as unbearable or dangerous.

This is what trauma does. It fragments us. It lives on in our nervous system and can  color our experience of the present moment in ways that are not in our conscious awareness. It shows up in the patterns of our current relational and emotional  triggers and the patterns of our reactions to those triggers that keep us feeling stuck, disconnected, or at war with ourselves or others. But trauma also points to how we heal.

"When we understand symptoms as the legacy of adaptation rather than pathology, the shame begins to lift."

Janina Fisher, PhD

How we heal...

In therapy, we do not work to erase or relive the trauma — we gently help you to reconnect with the parts of yourself that got stuck in survival. And we help your nervous system recognize that it's safe now. Healing isn't about fixing what's wrong with you or reliving what happened to you. It's an integrative and relational process of remembering our wholeness.

In clinical terms, my primary treatment approach integrates somatic/mindfulness-based interventions, interpersonal process, internal family systems/"parts work", and emotion-focused experiential techniques. I'm also trained in CBT, DBT, Trauma Focused-CBT, and Cognitive Processing Therapy for those clients wanting or needing a more thinking-based  "top - down" approach.

More about Honey

Dr. Honey Williams, PhD (she/her) 🌈

I was born and raised in Montana. I attended Montana State University where I completed my bachelor's degree in Psychology. I then moved to Seattle and completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Seattle Pacific University. After 7 years away,  I returned to Montana to open my private practice closer to family, the mountains and rivers, wide open spaces, and slower pace of life. However, the opportunities and diversity of Seattle, my WA clients, and the family I made while living there bring me back to Seattle often. I am grateful to have a telehealth practice that allows the flexibility to go back and forth between both homes and families without disrupting care for my clients. When the sun is out if I'm not working, you're most likely to spot me rollerblading around town, Green Lake, or the Burke Gilman Trail. During the winter you'll find me iceskating on whatever ice I can find (ideally outdoors!).

Training and Work Experience

My research and clinical training/experience has focused on trauma and mindfulness-based interventions. My dissertation research was published in the Journal of Loss and Trauma and examined the relationship between mindfulness, meaning-making, and posttraumatic growth in the context of traumatic grief. Throughout my doctorate program, I worked in a variety of clinical settings, including an outpatient psychiatry and behavioral health clinic, a residential treatment center, and group private practices. I also completed a one-year, pre-doctoral internship at Montana State University Counseling Center before returning to the Pacific Northwest to complete specialized training through a post-doctoral residency at Lighthouse Psychological Services. Throughout the various clinical settings, I gained in-depth training and extensive direct supervision in the psychological evaluation and evidence-based treatments for depression, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, PTSD, complex trauma, complicated grief, ADHD, learning disorders, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, substance use disorders, and personality organization. I have experience providing individual and group therapy, milieu therapy, crisis intervention, consultation, parent behavior management training, and psychological testing and assessment. After licensure, I continued working for Lighthouse before transitioning to my own private practice.

Out-of State BCBS/BlueCard Program

Many out-of-state  BlueCross/BlueShield plans (e.g. Premera Blue Cross in WA) include what is called the "BlueCard Program," which essentially means that your BCBS plan could be in-network with me. You can verify this by calling the BlueCard eligibility line at 800-676-BLUE (2583).

Life can get in the way of scheduled appointments. I that you provide me with at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Missed sessions or sessions cancelled within 24 hours of the appointment are charged the full session fee unless other arrangements are made (e.g. rescheduled within the same week if possible, which isn't always the case). It is important to note for in-network clients that insurance will not reimburse you for unattended sessions.

Sessions are typically 55 minutes and it is often recommended (especially at the start of treatment) that they occur on a weekly basis. Participating in therapy regularly and consistently can significantly improve the impact of your work and contribute to deeper exploration and change. With that said, during your intake appointment, we will develop a treatment plan that is best suited for your particular needs.
